Winston Park Rest Home celebrates a decade of service

Winston Park Rest Home celebrated its 10th anniversary on Friday 1 November.

WINSTON Park Rest Home celebrated its 10th anniversary on 1 November.

According to Rose Buckley, secretary to CEO at the Kloof Rest Home Association, the birth of Winston Park Rest Home was brought about in mid 2001. It opened its doors on 1 November 2003 with 10 rooms, namely the Daisy and Lily wings. The staff consisted of Margie Schroeder and carer Bridget Gumede. A couple of months later Inge Henry and Linda Sander joined the staff.

“At this time we only had three residents. The staff did the breakfast and suppers. Lunch was provided by Kloof Rest Home. The kitchenette was housed in the present lounge. Three months later the rest of the rooms were filled and consequently more staff were taken on board,” said Buckley.

Sister Margie Schroeder has been in charge of the home since the inception. The home comes under the umbrella of the Kloof Rest Home Association, overseen by the Head of Health Care Services, sister Hilary Davis.

The second phase, done in 2004 consisted of a further six rooms and the entrance hall, and this wing was called Daffodil. In 2004 Eva Moore started the in-house catering and was joined shortly after by Lana Stead providing top class meals. Today the Home has three chefs, namely Jill Marshall, Mariette Wright and Kari Sverre.

In 2007 the third phase, namely the Rose wing, was added and this consisted of the present fully equipped kitchen and comfortable lounge.

The CEO at this time was Geoff Maud followed by Des Wright with Don Bennett as chairman. Geoff Stead came in as CEO after Des Wright and today the home is run by Craig Smith, with Piet Van Breda as chairman.

Staff and residents marked the special occasion with a high tea and the unveiling of an antique mirror for the Home.
