WBHS celebrates outstanding results

The school with the top matriculant in the country is proud of its matric boys.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School matriculants achieved outstanding results in the 2013 National Senior Certificate examinations.

Headmaster of the school, Trevor Hall congratulated the 246 matriculants who exceeded the school’s expectations and performed well in the NSC exams. “Special accolades were awarded to our Dux, Asil Motala, for his exceptional achievement of being placed first in South Africa. The national rankings are done per ‘quintile’, and WBHS is placed in Quintile 5 which covers the most affluent schools,” said Hall.

Motala’s marks ranged from 94 per cent to 99 per cent with an average mark of 98 per cent. This places him as the top candidate in the country as his marks are significantly higher than those of the top ranked pupils in other quintiles.

“We are also pleased that 222 of our boys achieved bachelor passes (that is 90 per cent of the group). Ninety-two percent of the boys undertook mathematics and 86 per cent physical science, which means they did so in order to keep their career options open, which makes their achievements impressive indeed,” said Hall.

The school’s statistics included a 100 per cent pass rate, eight boys achieved eight or more distinctions, 24 boys achieved seven or more distinctions, 37 boys achieved six distinctions or more and 603 subject distinctions were achieved in total.

Graham Taschner, Gareth Kieck and Nikhil Nundlall achieved nine distinctions. The boys who each achieved eight distinctions were Asil Motala, Michael Baxter, Yusuf Bhabha, Dilan Koovarjee and Hermann Tapamo. Those who achieved seven distinctions were Mahomed Bharoochi, Nicholas Clarke, Aneet Daji, Michael Field, Richard Hill, Ethan Hitchcock, Yusuf Khan, Aury Livingstone, Nikhil Maharaj, Bandile Mbele, Jesse Mills, Yuvan Naicker, Kyle Pillay, Naeem Shaikh, Azahar Valiallah, and Stefan Wies. Those who achieved six distinctions were Stephen Coombe, Adriaan de la Rey, Dylan de Charmoy, Nicolas Finn, Yashil Ghazi, Alexi Kalamoudacos, Akshay Mahraj, Guy Moody, Kalin Naidu, Mahomed Osman, Wian Prinsloo, Zane Stenning and Rudi Wies.

“I thank all our teachers across all grades for their persistence in motivating the boys in their classes. I also appreciate the positive pressure that most parents apply at home in supporting our initiatives – this is extremely vital,” said Hall.

He added that the success the school achieved last year in academics, sport and the arts reinforces the school’s commitment to the holistic approach and its mission of nurturing all-round excellence.

“It is true that the more a boy puts into his school, the more he gets out of it. The boys mentioned above were certainly not one-dimensional academics, and they added value to the school over a number of different areas: in sport, performing arts and service,” said Hall.
