One dead, six injured in bakkie accident
M19 accident leaves one dead and six others seriously injured.
One person died and six others were injured in an accident on the M19 Pinetown bound after Mt Batten Drive off ramp on Monday, February 10.
Garrith Jamieson, operations director at Rescue Care Paramedics said they were shocked to find injured passengers strewn across the roadway.
Brandon Danks who was the first medic at the scene said, “When I arrived at the scene I noticed the bakkie had rolled and come to rest in the centre medium. I also saw all of the occupants strewn across the road.
“Someone immediately called me to check on one of the patients who was lying on the road. I assessed him and found out that he had died.
“My crew mate was busy treating a patient who landed on the bank after being ejected from the vehicle.
“We immediately called for more ambulances to assist with the number of patients,” said Danks.
Jamieson said after more ambulances arrived, the seriously injured patients were all stabilised using specialised spinal boards before being transported to a nearby hospital.
“One seriously injured patient was flown with a aero medical helicopter to Addington Hospital.
“It is unclear what caused the bakkie to roll numerous times, however the SAPS were at the scene and will be investigating further,” said Jamieson.
Traffic was severely affected as only one lane was open to pass the accident scene.
