Parfitt shares her knowledge

A passionate teacher publishes a workbook series designed to help pupils improve their math and literacy skills.

SUSAN Parfitt, an ex-teacher and current Kloof book store owner, has recently completed a workbook series designed to help pupils from Grade R to Grade 3 improve their maths and literacy skills.

Parfitt taught at the Drakensview Primary School in Escourt in the 1980s and at the Drakensberg Boys Choir School in Winterton in the 1990s.

She left the teaching career in 1992, when she and her ex-husband, Andrew Parfitt, launched a tutoring centre in Pietermaritzburg. While running the centre, Parfitt began designing, writing and publishing the user friendly workbooks and readers. The older series was designed to be utilised by teachers as supplementary material in class. In 1999 Parfitt established her own company, known as Ant Books. In 2008 she and her husband sold the tutoring centre.

According to Parfitt, her books have become very popular. She has sold thousands of books across the country and have even received calls from parents enquiring about her books. These requests prompted her to develop her new series, which is directed specifically at parents. “It is a homework help series that parents can use to help their children strengthen their English and maths literacy skills in the foundation phases,” said Parfitt.

“I have always been in love with teaching. I was born to be a teacher, and I have always been fascinated by what motivates children to learn,” said Parfitt.
