Pinky hopes to sew her dreams into reality

Help Pinky purchase a new sewing machine.

PINKY Mswane firmly believes that being in a wheelchair does not hamper any of her abilities and is dedicated to making a success of her life.

On 13 December 2011, she called the Hillcrest Hospital her home as she needed the facility for its rehab programme, where she would receive both the occupational and physical therapy she needed to get her life on track. During this time she began to sew a range of various items from beautiful dresses to beddings and curtains for the staff members.

“After matric I took a one year dress making course at the Thokobekwa Fashion School and since I have been at this hospital I have honed my talents by sewing for the staff and patients here,” said Pinky. “At some stages the staff would bring me a cut out picture from a magazine, I would then make my own pattern and create the dress from scratch.”

She said she enjoys making women’s clothing but is willing to make anything for her customers. She was discharged from the Hillcrest Hospital last Friday and her dream is to continue the business. “The only problem I now face is that the sewing machine I am currently using is not heavy duty enough for me to continue the work that I would like to do,” said Pinky.

According to Barry Edy, the vice-president for the Association of the Physically Disabled, he would like to see her continue to grow her business. “She has seen a sewing machine that would fit her needs perfectly and I ask the Highway community to help her reach her dreams,” said Barry.
