Gogos come out tops in gogolympics

Gogolympics went international this year as 35 grannies from Canada competed in the event.

THIS year’s gogolympics was bigger and better as there were 35 grannies from Canada competing in the event.

This event which was held at KwaNyuswa Sports Ground is organised by the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) and has attracted lots of people.

The sports played on the day included soccer, netball, skipping, tug of war, duck walk, passing the ball and jukskei. Qalokwakhe white team was the team of the day as they walked away with the soccer and netball trophy.

The grannies who competed are part of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust’s Granny Group project which was started by Sister Cwengi Myeni and has over 36 grannie support groups.

Myeni said she was very impressed about the outcome of the day.

“Although there were some hiccups especially about time, the day was a success. The grannies had a fantastic time.

“Gogolympics helps the gogos to stay fit, improve their health, decrease their stress and ultimately help them live longer to spend their days with their grandchildren who have already suffered enough grief through the loss of their parents,” said Myeni.

One granny from Canada Joanne O’ Shea said this was her first time in South Africa and she enjoyed every bit about the country.

“This is part of the project that we do for the Steven Louis Foundation which distributes the funds to the whole of Africa.

“We also have the gogo projects in Canada and other grannies are touring Ethiopia,” said O’ Shea.
