Pipe bust on Shepstone Road – again

Businesses and residents are once again forced to function without water as eThekwini workers repair a bust pipe on Shepstone Road.

A BURST pipe on Shepstone Road flooded the BP New Germany Service Centre on Wednesday 9 April at approximately 1pm.

Hundreds of litres of water gushed out of the burst pipe, rushed down Shepstone Road and pooled on the BP garage’s forecourt.

The BP manager, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Highway Mail that it is the fourth time in 18 months that the pipe has burst. “We have reported the issue to the municipality on several occasions, but they just do not do anything about it.They did tell us that the pipes are old. It is frustrating, because we are losing business,” said the manager.

According to the manager they reported the flooding to eThekwini Water and Sanitation at 1.05pm, and eThekwini officials arrived on scene at 1.50pm.

The official in charge could only confirm that they would have to cut off the water supply. He could not say which areas would be affected, or how long it would take for the pipe to be repaired.

Chelsea Spar, the Highway Mail and the BP garage are currently without water.

This follows previous water pipe bursts on Shepstone Road on Thursday 13 March and Thursday 3 April, which flooded the Chelsea Spar on both occasions.

New Germany residents, the Spar, the BP garage, The Highway Mail and other businesses were forced to function without water, on one occasion for two days. A water tanker provided the residents that were affected by the pipe burst with some water.
