Procession follows Christ’s last hours through Durban

Churchgoers depict the last hours of Jesus Christ in a procession to the Durban City Hall on Saturday.

THE central business area of Durban took a step back into the times of ancient Jerusalem when a depiction of the last hours of Jesus Christ was re-enacted along Dr Pixley Kaseme street on Saturday, 12 April.

Seven floats, signifying different scenes, were led by a procession depicting the final steps of Jesus as he carried His wooden cross through the streets of Jerusalem. The sadistic treatment of Jesus was portrayed by a company of Roman soldiers.

The march started at the Berea Christian Centre and ended with an Easter message by Pastor John Torrens, of Durban Christian Centre, outside the Durban City Hall.

A 2000 strong crowd was part of the procession.

The event, organised by Durban Christian Centre, featured churches from Wentworth, Phoenix, the DCC Jesus Dome and Conquering through prayer Ministries from Overport.

This was a build up to the Durban Christian Centre’s Easter production, OWAFA – One Week And Forever After.

The play is a fast-moving adaption of the last week in the earthly life of Jesus Christ which will be presented at the Durban Christian Centre Jesus Dome over the Easter weekend.

With a cast of 200, the play features specially written music and song as well as several colourful dance scenes. There will be use of interactive multimedia to add depth to the scenes.

A feature of the play is the emphasis on the range of emotions that Jesus experienced during this last week. It also highlights the inability of His followers to understand the events and the eternal significance of what was happening.

The play opens on Good Friday evening at 7pm and again on Saturday at 7pm. The final show is on Sunday at 6pm. Tickets are available at the church or at the door for R30.
