One dead, 17 injured in N3 collision

Rescue Care paramedics and various other emergency services raced to an accident scene early this morning near the Pavilion Shopping Centre.

TWO taxis and a bakkie collided on the N3 West bound near the Pavilion at 6am on Monday morning.

Rescue Care paramedics were called to the scene and, according to Garrith Jamieson, the spokesman for Rescue Care, people were found strewn across the national highway.

“More emergency services were immediately called to assist at the scene. One man was unfortunately fatally injured and was declared dead by paramedics,” said Jamieson. Seventeen other people were injured in the accident and a few of them were seriously injured. Jamieson said they were stabilised on the scene and were transported to various Durban hospitals.

“It is alleged that a taxi travelling on the Durban bound carriageway somehow lost control and went through the centre median before colliding with the second taxi and a bakkie travelling west bound. SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating,” said Jamieson.

Traffic was severely affected as there was only one lane open while emergency personnel worked to clear the scene.
