Community unites after devastating blaze

The Kenton family has received lots of support from Highway residents, after their house burned down last Wednesday.

HIGHWAY residents have united to assist the family whose home burned down on Homestead Road in Forrest Hills on Wednesday.

A fire, which started at approximately 5.30pm, consumed the home and all of the family’s belongings.

The Kenton family, who did not wish to have their names published, only managed to salvage a few photos and old toys from the garage. The cottage in the backyard was also not damaged by the blaze.

A neighbour, Belinda Daubinet, said many residents and organisations have offered to assist the family.

“Their home was completely destroyed. There is nothing but rubble left. The cost of things add up quickly when you have to buy everything from scratch. Many people have donated clothes, toiletries and Tupperware,” said Daubinet.

Daubinet also reported that they specifically need items for the dogs, such as dog food, blankets and beds.

“They were staying in our yard for the first couple of days, but now they are back in their own yard. We have not really received any donations for the dogs, and they desperately need some items to make life a little more comfortable for them. They have shelter in the garage, but no warm and soft blankets or beds,” said Daubinet.

Teresa Jones, of SA CAN, who has been acting as the family’s media liaison, reported that the family was devastated at the loss of one of their pets, but are grateful for and overwhelmed by all of the help and support they have been receiving from the community.

“The family has requested that anyone who would like to help them should buy shopping vouchers (Pick n Pay, Pavilion, Game, Spar, etc.) rather than items, as this will allow them to buy what they need and when it is required. This will help to cut down on unnecessary duplicated donations. The family also has some allergies, which prevents them from using certain products,” said Jones.
