A PACK Right employee is being treated in the high care unit in hospital after he was allegedly attacked by NUMSA protestors on Thursday morning.
Reuben Govender who works for a company manufacturing plastic and synthetic rubber on Stockville Road in Mahogany Ridge, Pinetown, said he was attacked with iron sticks and stones, while walking to his place of employment.
Govender was seriously injured, x-rays revealed that several ribs have been broken and he was severely wounded on his head. He also suffered many bruises on his body and his front teeth were loosened during the attack.
The Phoenix father of three said that he pleaded with the protestors not to harm him as he is not part of the metal industry, but they refused to listen. They just attacked him.
“I was not the only one who was attacked. Several other workers from the area were also assaulted. This resulted in my company closing its doors until Monday,” said Govender.
Due to the extent of his injuries, he was not able to report the incident to the police, however his manager has done so on his behalf.
