Take part in the two winter schools at UKZN Westville campus this July.

THE College of Law and Management, Teaching and Learning unit at the UKZN Westville campus will host two winter schools from Sunday 6 to Saturday 12 July.

The two classes are the EMS Winter School and The Literacy Winter School. The EMS Winter School is for 220 Grade 11 and 12 pupils who are studying mathematics, English and accounting. These classes are for the rural KZN schools in the Department of Education quintiles 1 to 3 categories. The full quota for pupils has been met.

The Literacy Winter School is a week long programme for 150 pupils from Grade 10 and 11. It will address academic literacies, the language and

specialisations of mathematics, commerce related subjects (accounting, business studies and economics), science related subjects (physical science and life sciences), computer literacy, environmental sustainability and life style (leadership). This Winter School is targeted at equipping pupils with critical skills in preparation for the higher education experience and access to higher education institutions. Places are still available for this Winter School.

“We are seeking applications from quintile 1 and 2 schools in the Inchanga, Hammarsdale, Mariannhill, Botha’s Hill and Valley of 1000 Hills areas. Ten pupils (five Grade 10 and five Grade 11 pupils) from each school, who take the related subjects and who have a level 3 or 4 mathematics and level 3 or 4 English for the March 2014 examination will be considered,” said Angela James, of UKZN Westville.

The only cost to selected pupils will be for transport to UKZN on 6 July and from the campus on 12 July. The tutorial participation, including accommodation

and meals for the week of the Winter School, are sponsored by Citi Foundation and are free to the pupils. Email at Ngubanet@ukzn.ac.za.
