Tyra nets KZN captaincy

Kloof Senior Primary School's SPAR Star of the Month - July 2014.

KLOOF Senior Primary School’s SPAR Star of the Month is Tyra Jeanne Scott.

Her abilities on the track and in the swimming pool set her high up in the sporting world as she continuously challenges herself to take part in as many sports as she can tackle.

The Grade 6 pupil is part of her school’s swimming team and is currently the overall championship for the U12 age group. During her three years at the school she has also taken part in cross country and netball.

In the first term this year, Tyra competed in the Pinetown and Districts and tried her hand at javelin, long jump and high jump, while she placed fourth in discus and took second place in shotput and the 80m and 150m sprints. She has won the two sprint races consecutively for five years.

Before the school holidays began, the 12-year-old sports star was chosen to join the KZN U12 netball team. She joined the rest of the girls in her age group for a one week tour to Margate and Edgewood. “The first two days were practice rounds and on the third day I was chosen as the team’s captain. I was so happy when they told me that most of my friends thought I had started crying,” said Tyra.

She said her goal as a captain was to inspire her team mates and help grow their confidence in their abilities, uplift them when they lost and keep them upbeat for the next game they played. “On my first day as captain I was injured during one of the games and fractured my left hand. I begged the coach to let me carry on playing in the games for the next four days as I was the captain of the team,” said Tyra.

In her spare time, she said she enjoys going to the beach and hanging out with her friends and shopping.

Her aspiration is to take part in the Olympics one day, for netball or athletics. Once she completes her schooling career she would like to study to become a lawyer but would also like to be part of the South African Netball team.
