A RECENT partnership between a resident, a private security company and the SAPS resulted in the arrest of suspected cable thieves, highlighting the importance of collaboration and co-operation in the fight against crime.

The Pinetown SAPS confirmed that an incident relating to suspected cable theft occurred in late August at the corner of Lilyvale Road and Mariannhill Road in Pinetown.

The station’s communications officer, Jennifer Naidu, confirmed that two suspects were arrested and were found in possession of 1m of copper cable and five rubber pipes suspected to have been stolen.

“Both suspects were charged under Section 36 and made their first appearance in court on August 31. The matter remains under investigation,” said Naidu.

According to Marshall Security, the company’s tactical officers had been patrolling Mariannhill Road when they “were approached by a resident who reported two suspicious individuals walking along Mariannhill Road carrying a bag”.

“The resident alleged that the individuals may have been involved in cable theft. The officers immediately investigated and stopped the two suspects. During a search, several cables were found in the suspects’ possession. The suspects could not provide a satisfactory explanation as to how they came into possession of the cables and were immediately apprehended.

“Pinetown SAPS were informed and arrived on scene shortly thereafter, taking custody of both suspects and the recovered items. The suspects were transported to the police station for further investigation and processing,” the company said.

The Greater Westmead Association and Marshall Security commended the vigilance of the resident who reported the suspicious activity and the proactive response of the security company’s officers, which resulted in the arrest.

“This incident once again highlights the important role that vigilant community members, proactive patrols, and co-operation with SAPS play in identifying suspicious activity and combating cable and infrastructure theft within our communities.

“The Greater Westmead Association, in partnership with Marshall Security, remains committed to proactive crime prevention throughout the Westmead area. Through dedicated patrols, rapid information sharing, and co-ordinated responses with SAPS, the initiative continues to play an important role in combating crime and protecting the businesses and communities within the GWA footprint,” said the association.
