Soccer star shines bright

John Wesley School's SPAR Star of the Month - July 2014.

IF ever there was an example of natural talent being played out on the sports field, John Wesley School Grade 7 pupil, Mwelisi Memela, would carry the torch.

He is a born leader with a passion for all sports and for these reasons was chosen as the school’s SPAR Star of the Month. He plays 1st team soccer and rugby and also enjoys swimming, hockey, cricket, athletics and volley ball.

Mwelisi was selected for two positions in the KZNIPSSA U13A soccer team this year. He was also made vice captain of his team at the Bill Stewart National Football Tournament. The tournament was held at the St David’s Marist in Gauteng at the end of June. Although the KZNIPSSA U13A team did not make it through to the finals, his talent was recognised at national level and he intends to try out again next year. He regards his coach, Sonez Barnard, as his mentor as she encourages him to always do his best in all areas of sport.

“Mwelisi is a wonderful example of focus and dedication paying off, and although he is a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to the game, he is a generous team player on and off the sports field,” said one of his teachers, Michelle Pretorius. “He certainly has contributed immensely to the phenomenal success enjoyed by our rugby’s 1st team this season, and we are justifiably proud of his good sportsmanship,” added deputy principal, Darron Tarr.
