- November 1 and 8
Choral music shining light into darkness
The Durban Chamber Choir (DCC) presents This Shining Night: Music Shining Light into Darkness at the Kloof Methodist Church on Sunday, November 1, starting at 15:00, and at St Thomas in Musgrave on Sunday, November 8, starting at 15:00.
The DCC presents a carefully curated programme of music from Renaissance masters to modern jazz standards, and Scandinavian composers to traditional isiZulu songs.
Highlights include the accessible Ave Verum Corpus from Jenkins and the Sanctus by Sandström – almost plainchant in manner reminiscent of a body of sacred, unaccompanied vocal music used in the liturgies of the Western and Eastern Christian churches.
Setting the tone for the afternoon is Barber’s lyrical neo-Romantic art song, Sure on this Shining Night.
Joining the DCC as a special guest is Yosuke Matsui, principal trumpeter at the KZN Philharmonic.
The choir’s conductor is Margrit Deppe. She is the co-principal oboe and cor anglais of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and a commended organist.
She teaches piano at Clifton School and, in 2023, was the church musician and cantor at the Nauen Rathenow Church District in Brandenburg, Germany. Tickets are available through Quicket, or at the door for R120, concessions R80. Join the choir after the performances for tea, cake, and conversation.

- November 4 and 5
Dark comedy at Seabrookes Theatre
Durban Macbob Productions, in association with The International School of Performing Arts (ISPA) third year students, bring Yasmina Reza’s acclaimed dark comedy, God Of Carnage, to the Seabrookes Theatre on DHS campus, on November 4 and 5 at 19:00.
What begins as a civilised meeting between two sets of parents quickly descends into a hilarious and increasingly chaotic battle of words, egos and accusations in God of Carnage, the award-winning dark comedy by acclaimed playwright Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton.
ISPA presents this razor-sharp comedy featuring four of ISPA’s third-year musical theatre students: Damien Butt, Jenna van Eyssen, Khethukuthula Ngcobo and Skhulile Gwala, under the direction of Aaron McIlroy.
With biting wit, uncomfortable truths and laugh-out-loud moments, God of Carnage explores the thin veneer of civilisation and asks just how far people will go when their pride, prejudices and personal frustrations take centre stage.
God of Carnage promises an entertaining evening of dark comedy that will leave audiences laughing, squirming and perhaps questioning their own behaviour when civility goes out the window.
This amateur production of God of Carnage is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd.
Tickets cost R150 and R120 for students and pensioners. Booking is available through Webtickets.
