Municipality warns of bogus job ads

eThekwini Municipality has warned residents of bogus municipal job ads on classified websites.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has distanced itself from adverts posted on various classified websites for municipal vacancies.

The deputy head of the municipality’s Human Resources Unit, Reginald Mkhize, said the municipality has become aware of fraudulent advertisements for municipal vacancies placed on the Gumtree and AdsAfrica websites recently.

“We would like to categorically state that the municipality has not placed these advertisements on these sites,” he added.

Mkhize said these advertisements always include a fee to be paid by the applicant in order to register or apply.

“The municipality would like to make the public aware that these jobs are fraudulent. As local government, the municipality does not charge the public to apply for jobs. This is a free service. We appeal to the public not to

respond to any of these jobs because they are bogus,” said Mkhize.

He said in another case, the applicant received an email, supposedly from the municipal E-Careers site, telling the person to go for an interview and to pay a fee. E-careers is the municipality’s online recruitment system. Both these cases are being investigated by the City Integrity and Investigations Unit.

“We are warning the public about these scams so that they do not become victims,” said Mkhize.

“We urge the public to report these cases to the City Integrity and Investigations Unit on 0800 202020.”
