Brooke Street to close for weeks due to China Mall demolition

The road will be closed for nearly a month, starting tomorrow, but the City advises some alternate routes to take to get into the city centre.

MOTORISTS who frequent the CBD are urged to exercise caution and plan alternate routes in advance due to the planned closure of Brooke Street (an extension of the M4 Southern Freeway heading into Dr Pixley KaSeme Street) from Friday, May 31, to Friday, June 21, as the China Mall demolition continues.

The eThekwini Municipality said in a press statement that metro police will be available to ensure the steady flow of traffic and to assist motorists.

Motorists are urged to consider alternative routes into the city centre. These include:

  • Left into Anton Lembede Street, right into Warwick Avenue and right onto Dr Pixley Ka Seme Street.
  • Margaret Mncadi Avenue (Victoria Embankment) off-ramp.
  • Che Guevara Road (Moore Road) off-ramp.

The press statement further read: “The City apologises for any inconvenience caused. However, this road closure is for the safety of motorists while the demolition is underway. It also allows the contractor access to the site without hampering traffic flow in the area.”
