Novel donation brings cheer

The 56 residents at the Kloof Rest Home were excited to see the newly upgraded library and TV room.

THE residents of the Kloof Rest Home were ecstatic to see the newly upgraded TV and library room, a refurbishment that was made possible thanks to the donation from St Mary’s DSG pupils.

The group of senior primary school pupils at the school chose the home as their beneficiary and at the beginning of the year and set out to raise funds by hosting bake sales. A sum of R10 000 was donated to the home which was then used to refurbish the dilapidated office into a more tranquil setting for the residents to relax in. There are currently 56 residents at the Kloof Rest Home who are either in frail care or medium care. ” This kind of donation is both vital and absolutely fantastic for us as it allows us to upgrade the facilities instead of just maintain them, which in turn increases the quality of life for our residents,” said Craig Smith, CEO at the Kloof Rest Home.

The whole room received a revamp, the chipped red flooring was replaced with beautiful tiles, the walls were repainted and more bookshelves were added and the existing ones were repainted. The rest of the money will be used to replace the door to the library as well as the windows and whatever is left will be used to upgrade the stimulation officer’s office.

The pupils donned their Christmas garb and sang a few songs before they handed out presents to the residents. “We teach the girls to give back to the community, and not just by giving money, but also their time. We chose the home as it was in our neighbourhood and thought it would be a great way to help and uplift an organisation in need that is close to us,” said Jeanette Thindisa, a teacher at St Mary’s DSG.

Craig thanked the pupils, Jeanette and Norma Minter-Brown, also a teacher at the school, for their continued support of the NPO.
