ANC councillor tackles 2015

Ward 21 councillor shares his plans for 2015.

BONGANI Gumede, ANC ward 21 councillor, started 2015 on a high note as his wishes to empower young people are on the right track.

Gumede said his dream to form his trust, Ikusasa Lethu, a youth foundation, was fulfilled.

Sixty young people from inner and outer Durban were part of the youth camp funded by eThekwini Municpality that was held in Margate on Friday 9 to Tuesday 13 January, where they participated in various outdoor activities.

“The aim of these activities was to teach young people to be able to work in teams and be able to discuss the challenges they encounter in their lives; they need to learn that obstacles can be resolved when they discuss them with the right people.

“They were also trained on how to start a youth organisation so they can be able to go back to their communities and make changes.

With the start of the new year, Gumede said he will again need the help and the commitment of the community to tackle 2015.

His plans for 2015 include procuring various sport equipment and encouraging young people to participate in different sports.

“I also wants to start extra classes for Grade 8 to 12 pupils and a swimming club for primary school pupils, as there are people who can get involved in swimming in Clermont, and we already have a swimming club,” he said.

He added that he wants to get his project for the senior citizens up and running.

“Elderly people are a special part of the community and they need to exercise to stay healthy,” said Gumede.

He said he would like to thank the municipality for funding his trust.

“It shows that the municipality cares about the future of young people.”
