UKZN protests sparked by student arrests

Order has been restored at UKZN Westville campus following student protests earlier this morning.

A NUMBER of students engaged in illegal protest action at the UKZN Westville campus this morning, barricading the road leading up to the campus via the entrance gate located near the Westwood Mall.

It was alleged that students were calling for the release of approximately eight students who were arrested by the SAPS in the quad area on the Westville campus yesterday.

According to an ECR News Watch report, the Westville campus’s SRC president was part of the arrested group.

In a statement released by the university it confirmed that the group of students had been arrested for being in violation of a High Court interdict.

The statement claims the interdict protects the university against unlawful protests, disruptive gatherings, demonstrations, mass action, intimidation or any violent act to persons or property at the entrance and premises of university campuses.

The statement also said the situation on campus is under control and the road has been reopened. SAPS, University Risk Management Services and the Public Order Policing are presently monitoring and continuing to disperse the protestors.
