Women raise funds for KZN children

Each person was asked to donate a minimum of R50 and many of the attendees donated a plate of eats for the occasion.

A TEA party was held in Everton in order to raise funds for Umduduzi on Sunday, 13 September.

Umduduzi is an NGO which was founded by Dr Julia Ambler and Tracey Brand in December 2012. The organisation provides hospice care for children within KwaZulu-Natal.

Both women had been providing children’s palliative care services to the state sector within KwaZulu-Natal between 2008 and 2012 through their work with The Bigshoes Foundation before it was dissolved nationally. Ambler and Brand felt it was imperative to continue the work that had been started.

Together with a team of committed board members, Umduduzi was founded. The work that began will continue and children living with life-limiting or life-threatening illnesses will have the opportunity to be cared for by a dedicated team of specialists.

Umduduzi treats children as people, not just as patients, and seeks to ensure that children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions receive the best possible care and comfort. They are also involved in providing health professionals with further training in palliative care.

The tea was held as part of their ‘Crumbs for Comfort’ initiative. To raise funds, Umduduzi has asked supporters to put their skills into hosting an event of their choice. The Mad Hatter’s tea party was hosted by Sheryl and Lauren Hepworth, who has worked with Ambler at both the Clairwood Hospital and the KZN Children’s Hospital.

Each person was asked to donate a minimum of R50 and many of the attendees donated a plate of eats for the occasion. Chateau Gateaux also contributed to the event by sponsoring two cakes. The morning was enjoyed by all and also assisted in promoting the work done by Umduduzi. A total of R3 500 was raised for Umduduzi.
