
A MAN was arrested for the murder of elderly woman in the KwaNqetho Reserve on Wednesday, 3 February.
According to Cst Ndumiso Manqele, Hillcrest police were called out to the KwaNqeto Reserve near Nhlanhla’s Tavern on Wednesday. Upon arrival, police interviewed the deceased’s grandson, who pointed out where his grandmother’s (Gertrude Ntombele) body was in the nearby bushes. Ntombele’s body was covered with scratches around her neck.
“It is alleged that Ntombele was sitting in Nhlanhla’s Tavern at around 5pm on Tuesday night. She was being watched by a known man, who was warned by the community to stay away from the granny. Ntombele was last seen with this man and she never returned home. During the early hours of Wednesday morning, Ntombele’s grandson went out to look for his granny together with members of the community. They discovered her body in the bushes and she was declared dead at the scene,” said Manqele.
A case of murder was reported to Hillcrest police station and the deceased’s body taken to the Pinetown Mortuary for examinations to ascertain the cause of death. “Witnesses were taken to to the police station to submit their statements. Upon arrival, they noticed the same man arrested for being in the possession of stolen property. He was charged for possession of stolen property and appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 4 February. He was remanded into police custody for investigation into the murder case,” added Manqele.
