VIDEO: Chaos erupts as elections draw closer

Clermont and KwaDabeka pupils missed school on Monday, 18 April when protesters blocked roads and burnt tyres.

PROTESTERS who burnt tyres in New Germany blocking entrances to Clermont said the worst is yet to come if the ANC does not give them a chance to choose their preferred candidate for the upcoming elections.

Most of the children who attend New Germany and Pinetown schools had to be returned to their homes because of the intense situation in Otto Volek, Dinkelman, Freese and Blair Atholl Roads.

Police used rubber bullets to disperse the protesters and one person was arrested during the protest.bOne of the protesters said they are tired of the ANC leadership, which make decisions without consulting them.

“It is the policy of the ANC that four candidates are chosen to be screened by the committee if they are fit and deserving to lead. Four candidates were chosen and residents were not given a chance to vote for the person they want and trust as the community.

“We were given a name of a person we barely even know that he will be standing for the ANC in this ward.”

The protesters said this will cause a huge division in Ward 21, which some areas of Clermont and New Germany fall under.

“Where is the democracy that we fought for? We will continue protesting until our voices are heard,” they said.
