KWAZULU-Natal police, including the Crime Intelligence Unit, Provincial Task Team, National Intervention Unit and Umhlali K9 Unit conducted operations from 28 April into the early hours of 3 May, aimed at arresting wanted criminals, seizing unlicensed firearms and rooting out drug trade in the province.
Operations were conducted in most areas in the province, including Umlazi, Umbumbulu, KwaDabeka, Inanda, Newcastle and Madadeni.
Ten people were arrested and charged for different crimes. The criminals were arrested for four different murder cases, attempted murder, armed robbery, dealing in drugs, possession of dagga as well other drugs, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of unlicensed firearms.
Eleven firearms were recovered and seized, which were five pistols, two AK-47s, two 303 rifles and two shotguns. Police also recovered a Jeep Grand Cherokee that had been stolen in Gauteng.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended police on the arrests and the seizure of unlicensed firearms. “We will continue with similar operations to keep our province safe,” she said.
