Donate 67 SleepyHeads For Madiba Day
The cut-off date for donations will be on Monday, 13 July.
UNLIKE the popular television series, Game Of Thrones, where winter is always coming, the South African winter is already here and with that arrives with the need for community giving.
Mandela Day, falling in the middle of winter on 18 July, allows the opportunity for businesses, communities and the like to give back to society, big or small, usually through donations of food parcels, warm clothes and blankets.
However, it is not nearly as common to hear of donations that provide simple winter comforts, much like the 67 SleepyHead Babies for Madiba Day project.
The initiative aims to provide a minimum of 67 warm and cuddly friends to less fortunate children who lack the opportunity to have toys that provide joy and comfort.
67 SleepyHeads Babies for Madiba Day was birthed as the brainchild of Beverley Theron, a prominent business owner and avid philanthropist. Beverley mentioned the concept came to her while she was researching ideas of what she could do to give back to the community this year.
With much deliberation online, coupled with a passion for Madiba’s legacy and a push of direction from the girls at her crochet club, the recipe of 67 SleepyHead Babies for Madiba Day was born.
The overall concept of the project is a simple one, in that it asks of the crochet and knitting communities of South Africa to create their very own SleepyHead and donate it to Beverley’s work address in Musgrave, Durban.
“Being a mother of two teenage girls and having been involved in various charity projects in the past, I have noted the importance for children, especially those less fortunate, to have a toy for life and friend who can be their beacon of safety.
“So far, the general response to the 67 SleepyHeads for Madiba Day has been amazing with donations rolling in from all over the country. Even more amazing is how each SleepyHead has been lovingly and uniquely made, all boasting different styles, colours and sizes. My vision is to see 67 SleepyHeads for Madiba Day as an annual opportunity to give comfort to children in need,” said Beverley Theron.
The cut-off date for donations will be on Monday, 13 July, thereafter, the distribution logistics will be finalised to which all the SleepyHeads will be allocated to various children homes on Mandela Day, 18 July.
