Highway resident wins gold for his pots
Andrew Walford will host an annual Christmas exhibition from Thursday, 15 December to Sunday, 18 December at his home in Shongweni.
AWARD winning Highway potter, Andrew Walford recently returned from Mungyeoung South Korea where he bagged a gold award for his pots made from clay, which he digs out himself from the highlands of KZN.
Walford will have an annual Christmas exhibition from Thursday, 15 December to Sunday, 18 December where there will be hundreds of flame-fired pots and Zulu crafts.
Andrew has supported local crafters for many years, making traditional Zulu Isithebe place mats which he takes on international trips where they are appreciated by collectors and lovers of true craftsmanship.
One of the crafters, Nokwanda Khumalo also has a project that includes making baskets with lids that contain the “chawan” or eastern style tea bowls.
In the east they are presented in wooden boxes, but Andrew and his wife Leanda now send these tea bowls world wide with their beautiful hand woven containers.

Nokwanda’s brother Samkele who is 12-years-old and hearing impaired now makes the most exquisite baskets. The family are growing the tsema grass from which the mats and baskets are made.
It is Andrew and Leanda’s dream for more families to stay at home and pursue their passion and skill for craft. They have done everything they can to support several families including their own staff who eagerly make clay oxen and candle holders.
Andrew Walford pottery open days will be from Thursday, 15 December to Sunday, 18 December from 10am to 6pm. The exhibition will be at Andrew’s home in Shongweni. Take the Shongweni exit off the N3 freeway and follow the signs for 8kms to B9 in the Shongweni Valley M551. Visit www.andrewwalfordpottery.com for more information.
