Upper Highway residents unite against Hillcrest stench
The Upper Highway residents have also planned a motorcade/convoy through rural communities surrounding the Shongweni Landfill this Wednesday, 1 February.

IN the build up to the Upper Highway Air NPO’s planned Toxic Trek through Hillcrest on Saturday, 4 February, members of the community have also planned a motorcade this Wednesday through surrounding rural communities to create awareness about the noxious odour.
Siyanda Chonco, who works for World Changers Academy in Dassenhoek and has also been affected by the toxic odour, said the aim of the motorcade/convoy is to stage an educational campaign in rural communities that have also been affected, but have not been able to voice their concerns.
Chonco said people closer to the dump have no idea what is going on and are being silenced through cheap charity by the company in question with soccer jerseys for local teams and more.
“We would have a loud hailer while driving through the townships. This will catch the attention of masses at the same time and then, we”ll have an opportunity to mobilise more people not only to attend the trek but to be more involved as well. Already there are volunteers educating through door-to-door campaigns. We need your support to get more marginalised communities educated and involved,” said Chonco.
Those interested in joining the motorcade can meet at the open space opposite the T-junction on Milky Way, Shongweni and the road towards EnviroServ (same road as Denny Mushrooms) on Wednesday, 1 February at 2.30pm for 3pm. Contact Siyanda on 062 892 5939 or Sandile on 081 573 5111. No political party branding. More loud hailers are welcome.
