THOMAS More College’s Grade 10s who chose visual art as their matric subject relished the challenge of painting self portraits in a medium they had never used before, oils.
Their project required them to begin with four drawings. One had to be done in torchlight at night, another by candlelight, the third by a single night light and the fourth drawing was to be done during daylight with a specific light source.
“The aim of these drawings was to get them away from focusing on eyes, nose and mouth but to rather concentrate on the structure of the face with attention on shadows,” said their art teacher, Jane Jarvis.
The aspiring artists then chose a photograph of themselves, in high contrast, and painted it.
“After a single lesson of hesitation they began in earnest and the results are spectacular. As their teacher I have been rewarded with enthusiasm and dedication,” said Jane.
