THE demolition of shacks in Dassenhoek near the Mariannhill Toll Plaza on Tuesday claimed the life of one person and left two others critically injured.

One of the residents said they have been living in that area for over three years and have invested a lot in their property.

The resident who wished to remain anonymous said security from the Land Invasions Unit open fire on the shack dwellers without any explanation.

“It is so sad that people have to die while trying to build themselves a home. This place was unattended to for many years, now that we have built in this area, they said we are not suppose to stay here as it is set aside for upgrades.”

He said about 20 shacks were demolished.

“The Land Invasions Unit didn’t talk to anyone. They just fired live ammunition, all shots were fired in the back. The intention was clearly to kill, to teach a lesson,” said the organisation.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
