Elderly Hillcrest couple hijacked in New Germany, husband shot

The hijackers fled in the couple's car with the paralysed wife who was later found in KwaDabeka.

AN elderly couple in their 80s who were visiting  friends for lunch were hijacked in Sander Road, New Germany just after 12pm, today (20 July).

According to Joe Ribeiro, Ashley Residents Neighbourhood Watch  controller, the couple parked their VW Tiguan outside their friend’s house.

“When they were leaving, two men approached them and shot the husband (89) in the chin and fled with his wife who is paralysed and in a wheelchair,” said Ribeiro.

Peter Williams of the GlenPark Neighbourhood Watch said the old woman was found in KwaDabeka.

“They threw her out and somebody saw her and alerted the police. She has been taken to hospital. The car was also recovered,” he said.

Ribeiro applauded the quick response from police, security companies, neighbourhood watches and the ambulance services.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
