Learners enjoy golden opportunity to work at Hillary retailer

LEARNERS from Golden Gateway School recently completed a work experience programme with SPAR Hillary to help them get a gist of what to expect in the working environment.

Tersia Taskes, Group Promotions and Advertising for Main Spar Group, said, “Very helpful, respectful, eager learners have lent a helping hand in the bakery department, the receiving area and also assisting in merchandising to ensure that the shelves were well stocked and organised.”

Learners at Golden Gateway School are faced with various challenges, but mostly intellectual impairment. The school approached SPAR Hillary to accommodate these learners over a few weeks to expose them to “work experience”.

“Due to the sad fact that these learners are challenged with difficulties and very few of them will be able to secure positions in the working world, SPAR Hillary welcomed the “work experience” initiative to assist these learners receive interaction with the community and persons outside of their usual circle. As well as to help encourage improving confidence and changing mindsets about the role of people with disabilities in the workplace,” said Taskes.

Golden Gateway School strives to give their students a chance to dream and reach their full potential and ultimately the goal of finding employment! SPAR Hillary is proud to be associated with this community upliftment programme.

“Thank you to all staff in store for assisting and accommodating these learners, their smiley faces say it all, they had a wonderful time,” Taskes added.
