Malvern resident waits two years for pre-paid meter installation

"The relevant office will contact the resident and a meter will be installed as soon as the matter is resolved," eThekwini Head of Communications, Tozi Mthethwa.

LESLIE Steel, a Malvern resident has been waiting since 2015 for his pre-paid electricity meter to be installed by the eThekwini Municipality.

This follows an article by the Highway Mail last month in which a Kloof resident was forced to wait nine months to have his prepaid electricity metre to be installed.

Steel made a payment for his pre-paid meter in October 2015 and was told the meter will be installed within nine months.

But the months flew by with no meter installation in sight.

Steel then paid a visit to the Durban eThekwini Municipalty branch to enquire about his application and was asked to lodge a complaint.

According to the municipality, it has a list of more than a thousand residents who have applied to have electricity meters installed.

“In a normal case, the waiting period is six months. In the case of the complainant, there was a problem with the paperwork received.

“The relevant office will contact the resident and a meter will be installed as soon as the matter is resolved,” eThekwini Head of Communications, Tozi Mthethwa.
