Westville’s new market to highlight reading
The Mahogany Market hopes to create a fun and safe space for families to enjoy all that Westville has to offer.

HIGHWAY resident, Nishi Padayachee, will host the first informal, non-profit Mahogany Market at 38 Pitlochry Road in Westville North on Saturday, 3 February from 9am to 2pm.
The market, situated outside the Turtle Cafe, will focus on second-hand and collectable books and aims to develop the spirit of reading and the arts.
It will then be held on the first Saturday of each month.
“Apart from this community initiative around books and promoting reading, I hope to attract to the market a broader range of traders drawn from the local community to support the growth of small community businesses and home industries,” said Nishi.
“My long term goal, with the support of Ken Konar and the city of Durban, is to turn the venue around the Mahogany Market into a beautiful park and recreation centre with benches, tables, ablution facilities and proper lighting as well as recreational facilities for the aged and the disabled.”

A braai area is also being planned to promote family gatherings close to home.
“Westville, regularly described as Durban’s leafy suburb, has wonderful indigenous plants and birdlife and the planned park will offer an ideal setting to enjoy and appreciate these natural pastimes,” said Anivesh.
Other plans include the installation of an outdoor chess set and a paved area for exercise classes.
All community-oriented small traders selling bric-a-brac and household goods can contact Nishi Padayachee on 082 896 7220.
