‘Man of Steal’ sentenced to three years in prison

The 'Man of Steal' was no match for Westville detectives, who made sure he received a justified conviction for the crime he committed.

THIRTY-one-year-old, Thembelani Kweyama dubbed as ‘Superman’ received a three-year conviction without possibility of parole after he appeared in court recently.

Capt Elizabeth Squires, communications officer at Westville SAPS congratulated the investigating team, D/Sergeant P Pillay and D/Sergeant Philani Dumakude for their success in securing a speedy conviction for the case.

Kweyama was chased by Westville Crime Prevention members and neighbourhood watch patrollers on 17 April after he broke into a house in Marford Road in Westville earlier that day.

He was dubbed ‘Superman’ because of the shirt he was wearing and kept jumping over fences and walls, which helped him get away from the police.

Fortunately, quick thinking from a neighbourhood watch patroller who spotted Kweyama wearing the same shirt roaming around outside the Spar the next day, alerted Constable Wynand Laatz, who responded and arrested him.
