SARDINE UPDATE: Sardines are splashing about South Coast and Transkei
"If the sardine activity continues to bypass or not reach Durban, it is likely we will open more beaches this week."
WEDNESDAY morning revealed pockets of sardines, sighted throughout the South Coast.
These pockets were all behind the backline and beyond. The majority of the sightings were between Pennington and Mtwalume.
There were also reports of big pockets between Port Edward and Mnyameni which is in the Transkei.
The sea conditions are still unsettled which are not ideal for the netters trying to get opportunities to lay nets.
“Hopefully the sea will settle quickly and allow the fish to move into the surf zones again,” Operations Manager, Greg Thompson said.
“The majority of the Shark safety gear has been removed from the Durban Beach Front to Port Edward on the South Coast.”
The only beaches open on the Durban Beach today is South and New Beach.
The Sharks Board appeals to members of the public to exercise caution should they enter the water during this time.
The board will continue to monitor the movement of the shoals and will manage the shark safety gear in consultation with the coastal municipalities that are affected.
