GRADE 4 St Mary’s DSG, Kloof learner, Georgia-Anne Meyer, is its SPAR Star of the Month.
She is a proud eco-warrior and is certainly making a difference to the environment. St Mary’s is currently running an initiative whereby learners collect Eco-Bricks in support of local traders who use the bricks to build homes and craft furniture. This cuts down on the amount of plastic that would otherwise end up in the ocean.
Georgia-Anne has already collected 87 Eco-Bricks since the beginning of term two. She drinks no fizzy drinks and collects the empty two-litre bottles from neighbours and when picking up litter. She has also inspired others to collect and keep plastic out of the ocean by educating their family groundsman, Paul and his friend, Washington. The duo now also help collect bottles and plastic too.
Washington is the groundsman at an office block and is enjoying throwing away less plastic than before. The number of Eco-Bricks that Georgia-Anne brings in to school further inspires other girls to spread the word and get friends and family involved.
Each Eco-Brick weighs around 500g when packed tightly with plastic. Georgia-Anne’s mom, Lana, provides help and support. The eco-warrior also collects bottle lids and bread tags to help to raise funds for wheelchairs for the underprivileged.
Georgia-Anne is passionate about the environment and animals and has about 50 animals at her home. She plays the piano, enjoys tennis and rides horses and would love to be a professional horse rider when she finishes school.
Her best friend, Faith Lyle, said, “Georgia-Anne is a great friend and is very kind.”
