Knitters click needles for baby home
More than 100 scarves, beanies and blankets will be distributed among three worthy non-profit organisations in the Durban area.
A GROUP of dedicated women from the Rob Roy Retirement Village knitted hundreds of beanies, scarves and blankets to be donated to those in need in support of Mandela Day.
Joan Philpott, a long-term resident at Rob Roy Retirement Village, said she started the craft group about 10 years ago.
“The ladies get together in the morning just to keep occupied and it sort of progressed from making cards to sell to knitting. It is just lovely to see all of the things that have been crafted and it is wonderful that they are happy to give it all away as there is so much need,” said a beaming Joan.
“This type of project brings the ladies out of their apartments and gives them some activity and a form of fellowship. We have a lot of talented people and this is a way of giving back as it brings out the best in people,” said the Rob Roy Retirement Village’s general manager, Judy Wingrove.

Jo Teunissen of The Baby Home – Durban North, said, “Thank you so much for choosing The Baby Home for this very thoughtful donation. We know how much love and time goes into making these items for our babies and we really appreciate all your time, love and effort.
“We currently have a Baby Home in Durban North, a crisis centre in Hammarsdale, where we run a creche, and are excited to open a second Baby home in Umlazi. Your donation is going to ensure we can keep even more babies happy and warm.”
The recipients include The Baby Home – Durban North, The Robin Hood Foundation and the Jes Foord Foundation.
