Grade 5 girls make ‘paw’sitive change

The daring duo braved the cold for 24 hours and helped raise more than R20 000 for the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

TWO tenacious Grade 5 learners from St Mary’s DSG, Andrea (Andie) van Schoor and Rebecca (Becs) Köhne, bravely embarked on a fund-raising journey that saw them complete the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s 2019 Dog Box Challenge, where they spent 24 hours in a kennel.

The duo completely embraced all that the Dog Box experience had to offer and together they raised a whopping R21 720 for the non-profit organisation.

These best friends were inspired by Andie’s mum, Dianne van Schoor, who completed the Dog Box Challenge in 2018. Both girls, and Dianne, volunteer and help out at the SPCA when they can, and enjoy walking the dogs.

The soft-hearted girls love animals. Andie aims to be a vet and Becs dreams about becoming a marine biologist. When Andie isn’t busy with animals and school, she enjoys netball and being a part of the senior primary choir and Becs enjoys netball and horse riding in her spare time.

The Dog Box Challenge was an icy cold night but there was not a single complaint from either of the girls. They were up by 5.15am on Saturday and enjoyed a delicious hot chocolate drink together. They both agreed that they would happily have gone another night.

Together, Andie and Becs thanked each person who supported them, from Dianne for spending the night with them in the kennel, their parents, the SPCA for all they do for the animals, their friends, sponsors and visitors.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA had a record year with the Dog Box 2019 event. The NPO raised R 457 279 in 2019 alone.
