Elderly Kloof couple tied up, thieves flee with R40 000 worth of goods

Residents have been advised to be extra vigilant and aware of their surroundings during the national lockdown.

A MAN, armed with a knife, fled with items valued at R40 400 after he robbed an elderly couple in Kloof yesterday, Sunday, 29 March.

According to Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele the victim (81) was sitting with his wife in their house in Indwa place, Kloof.

“They were sitting in the lounge when they heard the Trellidor open. It was not locked,” said Manqele.

The victim was approached by a man with a knife.

“He tied the couple’s hands. He took watches, three cell phones and other jewellery. The items are valued at R40 400,” said Manqele.

In a separate incident shared by the Kloof CPF, it was reported that yesterday morning, there was theft from a property in Jerome Drive which ADT responded to. Two suspects were arrested.

The Kloof CPF members urged residents to be extra vigilant and aware of their surroundings during this lockdown.

“As we suspected, crime will continue, if not spike, with the lockdown.”

Manqele added that since the lockdown on Friday, nine people have been arrested for contravening the Disaster Management Act.

“We are saying to the people once again that they must stay at home. They are only allowed to buy food, to go to pharmacies and clinics.”
