Suspect killed, two police injured during Dassenhoek shootout

The suspect was hiding in a tunnel at the Dassenhoek Railway Station after robbing three men of their cellphones.

TWO police officers from the Shongweni and Durban K9 Unit were shot while responding to a crime scene at the Dassenhoek Railway Station.

According to KZN police spokesperson, Capt Thembeka Mbele, it is alleged that on Monday, 7 September, an armed man robbed three men of their cellphones and a wristwatch.

“One of the victims who resisted was shot, the gunman then ran into the tunnel where he hid,” said Mbele.

The injured police officers were taken to hospital.

“KwaNdengezi police are investigating charges of attempted murder, armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition,” added Mbele.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula commended the police officers for protecting themselves when they came under fire.

“Our police officers will not be threatened or deterred by criminals while executing their constitutional mandate and they will protect themselves when their lives are threatened,” he said.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
