Hillcrest High alumnus wins youth icon award
Shaylize Gopal says the Youth Icon win is a proud achievement that serves as a testament that true success is about making a difference.
SHAYLIZE Gopal, an alumnus of Hillcrest High School (HHS), won the Lotus FM Youth Icon award at the radio station’s 2026 Women of Substance Awards on Sunday (August 30).
The 19-year-old is a psychology student, model, pageant title holder and a passionate advocate for women and youth.
“Being selected as a finalist for the Lotus FM Women of Substance Awards 2026 was already a significant achievement for me. Competing alongside inspirational women from across the country, I was honoured to be recognised in the Youth Icon category for my commitment to using my platform to inspire and uplift others. Taking home the Youth Icon award made the achievement even more special,” said Gopal.
Gopal said she has used her platform to inspire others and make a positive difference in her community.
“My involvement includes supporting initiatives that provide food, clothing and care to children, families, women and vulnerable members of the community. My personal message is that no child should be hungry, and I believe it reflects my commitment to helping those in need and encouraging others to give back,” she said.

She added that her achievements in modelling and pageantry, which started in 2024, include 14 titles.
Gopal said she hopes to combine her education, experiences and platform to continue empowering young people, particularly young women, and encouraging them to believe in themselves and their potential.
She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Lotus FM, the Women of Substance Awards organisers, and everyone who voted for her and supported her in the journey.
“This Youth Icon win is a proud achievement for me and my family, as well as the Hillcrest community, and is a testament to my belief that true success is about purpose, compassion, leadership and making a meaningful difference,” said Gopal.
