High school sweethearts toast to 50 years of marriage

Karen and Herby Krause tied the knot on 6 March 1971.

THE saying, ‘time flies when you are having fun’ rings true for Paradise Valley couple who will be celebrating their 50th anniversary on Saturday, 6 March.

Herby and Karen Krause attended the same high school in Johannesburg and lived a block away from each other but said they really met at the Rand Easter Show.

They lived in Johannesburg before moving to Nelspruit.

In 1989, Herby was transferred to Durban and the couple has been staying in their home in Paradise Valley ever since.

The high school sweethearts went on to pursue their studies after matric before tying the knot on 6 March 1971.

Herby said he was attracted to Karen’s selflessness.

“I saw a different girl, a beautiful girl who was not full of herself. She was also a very sporty person and I also played a lot of sport,” he said.

For Karen, Herby’s honesty, kindness and generosity is what she said she loved most about her husband.

The couple said marriage is a partnership and not a competition, “You need to stick with each other and also have good moral standards,” said Karen.

After 50 years of marriage they are still in love and share a strong bond.

“We do practically everything together. We spend most of our days working around the house and in the garden, we even go shopping together.”

They added that they have four children and six grandchildren and feel blessed to be able to spend time with them often.

On their anniversary, they said they were going to have a small celebration with family due to lockdown regulations.
