Saien continues to add to his successes

Thomas More College's high school SPAR Star of the Month - April 2021.

SAIEN Moodley is Thomas More College’s high school SPAR Star of the Month.

The Grade 12 learner recently participated in an online International Day of Mathematics and, according to Saien, it was an awesome and interesting initiative as part of the programme included a maths quiz for Grade 10 to 12 in the learners’ category. He placed first and won a Mecer Tablet.

There were various sponsors and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) acted as the co-ordinator for the event.

Saien has always had a keen interest in mathematics and is grateful for all the opportunities and programmes he’s been exposed to, either by TMC or by way of his own initiative, especially since the outbreak of Covid-19, where many online events were made available. He’s been fortunate to represent South Africa in mathematics in China and Thailand and has previously been selected to attend training sessions at UKZN.

He enjoys the challenge of mathematical problem solving and the feeling of excitement when he’s solved a particularly difficult example.

Mathematics is about understanding, so his approach is to try to grasp the concept immediately, while being taught, and then expand his understanding by working through examples. For him, the best way to learn maths is by doing.

He also enjoys the networking these events provide and, over the years, has formed many firm friendships.

His cultural passion is drumming, has his Trinity grade 5 level, which also acts as a stress reliever and, being part of the TMC marimba band, has brought him much fun and enjoyment, especially during their pre-Covid days of tours, performances and competitions.
