The competition was adjudicated by three international judges from America, who were greatly impressed by the standard of Irish dancing in South Africa.

Sheila Davidson, from the Davidson Dance School in Hillcrest, said she was proud of their dedicated and hard working young dancers who competed against the best in the country.

“This championship was of particular significance as it was the first time that KwaZulu-Natal has hosted this prestigious event,” she said.

In total, the dancers won nine gold medals, nine silver medals and three bronze medals. Matthew Williams placed first in the overall championship in his age group, with Aimee Beckmann taking second place.
