Golden jubilee celebrations for Hutchisons
The loving Ashley couple, Peter and Erica Hutchison celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, January 1 surrounded by a few close friends.
THE beginning of the New Year marks a special milestone for Erica and Peter Hutchison as the loving couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, January 1.
They both grew up in the Eastern Cape and met through Erica’s colleague.
“I worked at a car dealership company while he was still at university. We clicked from the very first time we met. I can say it was love at first sight and the conversation just flowed and, from there, we went from strength to strength,” said Erica.
The Hutchisons tied the knot at a small church in Bushman’s River Mouth in 1972. “We were young. I was 21 and he was 22,” said Erica.

Peter said the decision to get married was not planned. “It just felt right as we had similar interests; we love the outdoors and we communicate a lot. At university, I was a party animal. My friends told Erica that she was never going to tame me but, here we are, 50 years later,” smiled Peter.
Despite all they have faced, both good and bad times, the Ashley couple is still going strong as they said they face whatever life throws at them with a united front.
The couple’s recipe for their beautiful, lasting relationship is because they took into consideration that no one is perfect and realised that there would always be bumps along every journey.

Erica said she adores everything about her husband. She beamed and said, “I love everything. He is a caring person, he is my rock. I know that I can rely on him. Yes, I do scream and shout at him sometimes, but we still love each other.”
“I sometimes shout back,” laughed Peter, who added that they learnt normal people will argue with each other from time to time, especially when they love each other.
“In life, no one is perfect and I do not regret my decision of making her my wife. Given another chance, I will do it again and I would not change anything. The key is to learn to disagree and communicate. I can say we compliment each other as we both have different strengths and weaknesses,” he said.
They were blessed with two daughters, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
