Glen Park residents tackle unkempt railway line

Patrollers described the deserted railway line as an easy entrance and exit for criminal elements into the area.

THE Glen Park Neighbourhood Watch patrollers and residents, who are fed-up of being easy targets to criminals, have cleared the overgrown bush near the railway line.

The deserted railway line has been under the spotlight for many years, and residents once took it upon themselves to revamp the building in the station which had become an eyesore after it was vandalised on numerous occasions.

Patroller, Marinus du Plessis, said that crime was on the increase, and he believes that the unkempt station was the cause of this as criminals were using it to hide and to enter and exit residents’ homes.

“There is not even a single light pole working at this station as all the cables were stolen. No one is taking responsibility for this station – no maintenance, no cleaning – it’s truly sad, as to many of us, this railway line is our heritage site; also, we have great childhood memories of it.

“I took a train to school each day, and in those days, the station was well taken care of. What changed?” asked Du Plessis.

Another patroller, Tino Munsami, said that besides the criminal elements, the place is such an eyesore. “We have turned into a neglected town, and what’s worse, it is degrading our beautiful town as a whole,” he said.
