WATCH: Elderly Kloof residents share their passion for tennis

For the last 16 years, several women in Kloof and the surrounding areas have participated in friendly fixtures, and some are still playing today.

IN the coming weeks, the world’s attention will shift to the green lawns of Wimbledon’s courts. For five Kloof residents, they remain focused, as always, on their passion and love for social tennis.

The tennis players meet every Wednesday morning for a ladies social and friendly tennis game between 08:00 to 10:30. They also meet on a Saturday for a mixed game of tennis at the Kloof Tennis Club which has been in existence for the past 100 years. The ladies expressed that the socials are open to all age and new members are welcome to join them.

The ladies believe that tennis and the friendships made have been, and continue to be, appreciated from the heady days of the 70s, 80s and 90s until today.

The team consists of five talented players, namely, Barbara Coleman (73), Hanni Bernhardi (73) and Jinny De Goede (73), Ria Endemann (79) and Penny Botha (84).

According to the tennis fanatics, Botha, Endmann and De Goede, they have been playing tennis for the past 70 years, while Coleman and Bernhardi have been playing for 50 years.

The tennis players claimed to be very competitive in their prime days of playing, as they participated in various tennis events. Therefore, in the latter part of their lives, they continue to play on a social level for the love of the sport.
