Kloof duo invent ingenious bin to reduce litter
The bins were created to reduce litter and create a safer environment.
COMMITTEE members of The Kloof Project, Bev Fowles and Kevin Schroeder, have, between them, come up with a cool idea to help reduce litter in the Kloof area, especially where people gather and where no municipal bins are found.
Schroeder said he devised a prototype to ensure that the municipal collectors could easily pivot the bin upside down to enable the contents to fall directly into a black refuse bag placed open on the floor below.
“This ensures a clean, bag-free bin,” he said.
The bin, which was first placed near the coffee takeaway in Old Main Road, was so successful, that a second one has been installed at the top of Krantzview Road where it joins Willingdon Avenue on the railway side.
“Here again, it has filled up with litter quickly, which is a positive for us as the public are using it rather than just tossing their waste on the footpath,” said Schroeder.
With buy-in from Durban Solid Waste (DSW), the duo said they were hopeful they can expand this offering to several more key zones in their area.
“Naturally, we would like it if the public were not littering in the first place, but we are realistic and had to come up with something to help the situation,” added Fowles who heads up the Recycling Portfolio.
