WATCH: The IPMS Durban annual Modelcon in action

The Durban plastic modellers of the IPMS gathered for their annual Modelcon this weekend to show their art pieces created throughout the year.

THE International Plastic Modellers Society (IPMS) in Durban held their annual Modelcon for the second time since 2019. The Modelcon was held on Saturday in Westville where all the creators met to showcase their artwork and demonstrate their skills to each other and upcoming creators.

The branch in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) consists of three regions, hailing from Northern KZN, the South Coast, as well as the larger Durban area. The creators had their tables set out from eight in the morning, displaying art pieces that ranged from military vehicles, cars, and aircraft.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, the chairman of the society, Dudley Stilwell, said it was such a marvel to see the creators come together once again.

“What we see here are the years of hard work of all the creators – they have poured their hearts out in the pieces they have created, and it shows. What we like in our pieces is the authenticity – we strive for them to come out looking less like toys and more like the real thing. This skill is acquired through more practice in our local gatherings that take place once a month,” he said.

The longest serving member of the society, Steve Harris, said the event on Saturday was another way of reviving the sport.

“Everyone here is gathered by the love of art. Parents have also brought their kids so they can learn from a young age like most of us here. We are also reaching out to similar societies so we can attract more people and grow the sport that we have plans to revive,” he said.
